Keeping the Peace While Handling an Estate Sale

Keeping the Peace While Handling an Estate Sale

When there are multiple family members involved in an estate settlement, it is easy for the executor or personal representative to feel they are “caught in the middle” of differing goals & expectations. Here are some tips to keep everybody happy.

  1. Don’t play favorites. Be cautious if one family member wants to hire a professional simply because they have a social relationship or past experience. Their “attorney from church” or “past real estate agent” may not be the best choice. Be sure to interview professionals and make an informed decision. Click HERE for a list of questions to ask when interviewing agents.
  2. Communication is key. Have the real estate professional involved in the transaction include all relevant family members regarding the initial pricing analysis, marketing efforts and changing market conditions. Information coming directly from the source will lessen the burden on the executor and will keep everyone informed.
  3. Keep everyone’s preferences in mind. Are some family members tech savvy while others prefer snail mail? Make sure you hire professionals that will accommodate different family members needs.
